Plantation House & Jonathan the Tortoise
Guided tour of Plantation House, the Governor's Official Residence. Plantation House has 35 rooms and is a Grade 1 Listed building. The library was added by Sir Hudson Lowe ("Napoleon's Jailer") and has a collection of 2,000 volumes.
The current Governor, Lisa Phillips CBE, took up her post on 26 April 2016. She is the island’s first female Governor.
Plantation House is home to Jonathan the Tortoise, one of four Seychelles Giant Tortoises brought to St Helena in 1882. He is thought to be the world's oldest living reptile and possibly the oldest land animal on the planet.
A fascinating morning tour to Longwood House, Napoleon's home from December 1815 until his death in 1821. In the last 10 years a lot of conservation work has been undertaken to preserve and restore the Emperor’s furniture and contents. The tour includes a stop a Briar's Pavilion, where the emperor spent his first couple of months on the island, and a visit to Napoleon's Tomb, where his remains were interred until 1840.
Half day tour to Diana's Peak or to the Heart-Shaped Waterfall.
St Helena is a wonderful place for explore on foot and there are a number of trails and hikes for walkers to take you to places of scenic beauty and interest. There are 22 Post Box walks, so-called because there is a post box at the summit of each with a visitors book. Hikes are graded in terms of difficulty in ascending order from 1-10 but do be aware that many of the walks involve sheer drops and little regard for health and safety.
The hike to Diana's Peak, the highest point on the island, takes about 3 hours. Difficulty rating 5/10.
The trail from Jamestown to the Heart-Shaped Waterfall takes about an hour each way. Difficulty rating 3/10.
